CalMTA currently has seven market transformation ideas moving through the market transformation initiative (MTI) development process. Two of the MTIs, Room Heat Pumps and Induction Cooking, have complete MTI Plans that determine the scope for future implementation and have been submitted as proposed MTIs to the California Public Utilities Commission. Phase II: Program Development research and analysis is being conducted for four of the ideas, as described in their Advancement Plans. In addition, CalMTA is working through Phase I: Concept Development for a Commercial Building Efficiency Accelerator (CBEA) idea.
Explore and learn more about these ideas in development below.
The Induction Cooking MTI aims to accelerate market adoption of these efficient, electric alternatives for use in Californians’ kitchens. We envision that all new homes in California will be built with induction cooktops and most sales of all cooktops sold in the state will utilize induction technology.
The Room Heat Pumps MTI aims to bring to market these efficient and affordable alternatives to AC window units in the summer and small-space electric resistance or gas heating in the winter. We envision a market where an improved version of this technology dominates product sales over separate, portable electric resistance heaters, window AC-only units, and possibility air purifiers.
CalMTA is pursuing a potential MTI to increase the heating and cooling efficiency in California’s commercial buildings by accelerating market adoption of remotely monitored, more efficient CRTUs across the state.
CalMTA is pursuing this potential MTI to increase market share of affordable alternatives to full window replacements through retrofit technology that improves envelope performance, saving energy and delivering comfort to occupants.
CalMTA is pursuing a potential MTI that seeks to transform the market for more efficient, greenhouse gas (GHG) emission-reducing water heating technologies in the foodservice industry.
CalMTA is pursuing a potential MTI that seeks to align the various statewide efforts currently underway to accelerate market adoption of highly efficient, electric heat pump water heaters in single family homes and small multifamily buildings.
The CBEA MT idea will accelerate reductions in energy use intensity (EUI) and GHG emissions in existing commercial and multifamily buildings over 50,000 ft2 by advancing market adoption of life cycle planning practices that incorporate EUI or GHG reduction goals into standard building management and investment decision-making.
The California Market Transformation Administrator (CalMTA) develops and manages market transformation initiatives in the state to reduce energy use and reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.
CalMTA follows a rigorous process for reviewing, scoring, and then developing relevant, timely market transformation initiatives. The process supports market transformation initiative creation from concept to program development to market deployment, as well as the eventual exiting of the market.
