Room Heat Pumps (RHPs) are a promising technology poised for widespread adoption and are the focus of CalMTA’s recently approved Market Transformation Initiative (MTI). To determine the efficacy of these products, CalMTA conducted lab testing of five RHP units from four different manufacturers. Since RHPs are considered an emerging technology and are classified as room air conditioners under federal appliance regulations, they are not required to undergo mandatory heating efficiency testing. CalMTA tested the units to verify the heating energy efficiency ratio (HEER) ratings specified by the manufacturers as well as conduct load-based testing to evaluate the performance of the units operating under their native controls.
This report highlights key findings and insights from the testing—information that will guide the MTI’s product strategy and shape future manufacturer engagement efforts.
