On March 11, 2026, CalMTA submitted a Tier 2 Advice Letter to the California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) seeking final approval of its revised Induction Cooking Market Transformation Initiative (MTI) Plan, in accordance with Decision 25-11-023.
The Decision granted conditional approval for the Induction Cooking MTI, which seeks to accelerate market adoption of induction cooktops and ranges to provide a high-quality cooking experience and a more efficient technology than traditional electric resistance and gas stoves. As part of the conditional approval, the CPUC directed CalMTA to revise the MTI Plan to place greater emphasis on 120‑volt (120V) plug‑in products and resubmit the Plan for final approval.
The revised MTI Plan reflects this direction, with its most significant update being an expanded product definition. The Plan now includes 120V non-battery-equipped, permanently installed products in addition to 120V battery-equipped products. While the broader induction cooking market — including 240V products — remains within scope, the updated MTI prioritizes 120V products, recognizing their greater accessibility and scalability as a pathway to accelerating market adoption.
CalMTA is looking forward to implementing the revised MTI Plan and advancing the adoption of affordable, efficient induction cooking technologies in kitchens across California.
The Tier 2 Advice Letter is currently under review with the CPUC. If approved, CalMTA will seek third-party firms via a Request for Proposals (RFP) to implement the Induction Cooking MTI in the 3rd quarter of 2026.
